How far does it get?? Can you get to the menu that will give you the options, like safe mode and 'last known good configuration'??

No, thats your BIOS, does it get any further?? You want to hold down the 'ctrl' key right after the BIOS screen. That black and white screen with everything listed, right before windows begins to load try holding dow the 'ctrl' key. You should get some menu bootup options like safe mode and last known good configuration.

holding down ctrl key doesnt work? it shows the bios screen and then it immeidately shows a meter filling up at the bottom of the screen. The meter gets filled really quick, then all i am left with is a thick white line at the bottom of the screen and then nothing happens. ive tried twice to press the ctrl key but get nothing.
thanx for your help

Try pressing F8 during that time. If that doesn't work, try pressing both of your Ctrl keys.

i went ahead and selected last known good config., and it gave me the option to start xp professional. But it does not give me the option to select my old o/s which was win2000. when i selected xp pro, the same thing happened, which is nothing.
hope that helps

That is what I was afraid of, it went far enough along in the winXP load so that it is kind of in Limbo now cause it doesn't have win2000 anymore, but winxp has problems. Boot with the WinXP cdrom choose install then it should give you the option to repair the current winxp installation. It's worth a shot and I don't think it can hurt any worse right now.
When you loaded winXP, did you do it from windows, and did you choose the upgrade option??

I am booting from some floppy disks now because I dont have a cd rom drive on my laptop, but now it gets through all 5 floppy disks and then at the very end it says to insert the cd into the drive. but i dont have a cd rom drive so what do i do. it cancels the install and i am back at square one.

Do you not have a cdrom at all, or is it one of those kind that you can not have floppy and cdrom at the same time?? The winxp cdrom is itself bootable, so you should be able to forget the floppies and set laptop to boot from cdrom, assuming you have cdrom available.. How did you do the original upgrade?
