stisvc.exe hogs my cpu

Overnight my machine has slowed and inspecting Task manager shows "stisvc.exe" is hogging the cpu time and cpu usage is at 100%.
I can't end the thread.
What is this doing?
I'm going to rebot in a moment, but I'm interested in why this should happen.
If it is monitoring a camera or scanner, well i do have a scanner attached, though I haven't used it in the last day.

Athlon 1gh, 512Mb, lots of disk space.
Any suggestions?

I found that out also. What i didn't understand was why it had become so aggressive over cpu usage. It might be to do with a USB CompactFlash reader, but I thought I had 'stopped' the media properly. I've just re-installed win2K & got most of the updates from MS: it seems a bit touchy about removing removal media without asking first which I don't remember from before.
