Question please help

I have an Artex computer with XP. Each time I try to open folders, run search, or use any button on my taskbar, i get a message saying "Windows Explorer has encountered a problem and needs to close. We are sorry for the inconvenience" I have rebooted, re-installed xp, and ran a virus check with norton. I ran it in safe mode, but then my internet didnt work (explorer/aim). This has happened for a while now. It happened a while ago, and I gave up and shut it off manually, then it worked. I tried doing it this time, but no dice. I need some help, so please give me any suggestions.

Hello TheVelcroHero,

Remove any unwanted programs running in the background using MSCONFIG's Selective Setup.

Run Defrag and Scan Disk to ensure your system is running fine.

Delete Temp Files aswell as Temporarily Internet Files.

Have you scanned for Viruses? Trojans?

Maybe repairing Internet Explorer will do something.
