Question "System Volume Information" folders

When I installed XP as my 3rd O/S, it created a hidden folder on all of my 5 partitions.

What is this folder for and is are they safe to delete?

It's for XP's system restore, and contains all the info on how to restore that drive if needed.
If you wish, you can turn off selected drives, but I would recommend leaving your boot drive on.
Right click My Computer, select Properties, then the System Restore tab.

Boot drive as in...what? My first O/S (win98SE) or my third (XP Pro)?

Both.
In XP, if you look on the System Restore tab, you will see which 2 drives to leave, and you can disable the rest. (Ignoring the dire warnings).
98 doesn't have system restore. It has scanreg.

edit: I posted this assuming that you have more than the 3 partitions. It's not really necessary to turn it off at all, unless you're really short of hard drive space.
If you have more than the 2 boot partitions, then you can turn it off on any non-boot partitions as a waste of space.
I have (currently) 8 partitions, and only use system restore on the boot partition of XP.
What I do NOT want happening, is a virus/trojan getting into my system restore files (yes, it happens!) from another boot partition, and screwing up the works, thus defeating the purpose of the whole thing.

So it's only really useful for XP.

Btw, I have 5 partitions; 3 have O/S's (98SE, 2k, XP)

Then leave it run (it only runs in XP and ME) on the 3 boot partitions, and turn it off on the other two.
As long as XP doesn't become infected, the others will always be OK, as you can restore their last known good configuration through the XP console.
Lets say you're messing around with 98, and can't even get to the scanreg. Boot to XP, run system restore, and it will be back to before you messed it up. Same with 2k.
