Okau, I have a Intel P2 300Mhz PC and I was wondering if it would be a good idea to upgrade from Win98 to Win2000??
If you need anymore info on my PC specs let me know. ~Sam |

I myself dont use 2000, but I figure if you want to upgrade your OS, you might as well as go for XP, pro, or home, your choice, they are both very good, easy to use...Any particular reason why you want 2000?

If 98 runs good on it and you are happy with it there's no real reason to upgrade your OS. I am not fan of 98 myself but if it has worked well this long for you why change?

well, one good reason I have heard to upgrade OS to XP is(if your a gamer) it improves game play by 10% maybe even more, dont ask me what it improves but I have heard the quote before, and people have agreed, Im on XP and I knowt handles all my games very well...never tried any of the games on an older os though, so Im not sure

I wouln't advise upgrading to win2000 (and definately not XP) on a 300MHz machine. An upgrade to an O/S that requires better hardware to just run basic functions is just asking for trouble. If win98 runs fine for you, then there's really no reason to upgrate.

i wuld stay with 98 also unless you are getting into a business setting and also it might be a strain on your setup and actually run slower..

I am completely for upgrading to Windows 2000 or XP. The oldest of my four computers is a Pentium II - 350 megahertz running Windows XP Professional. And it has not had a problem since October of 2002 when I first installed it. Of course the computer is not the stock one. I have 512 megabytes of Kingston PC100 SDRAM and a 16 megabyte Nvidia Riva TNT video card installed. The only components that are original is my motherboard and processor and the floppy drive. You need to give us the specifications of your computer so we can more accurately help you out. Post it as soon as you can!

How much RAM do you have? Windows 2k should be ok on 128 megs but XP will run like crap. I think it's a great idea since 2k is way more stable than 98 is.

RAM is key. I have a 366 w/128MB laptop and Win2K runs OK (a little pokey at times). If you're happy, don't upgrade unless you have a very compelling reason.

I put 2K on a Dell P2-300 with 128 ram for a relative and it runs great. I have 2K on my P233MMX laptop with 64 ram and it runs stable but slow. In my opinion, unless you are a gamer or have apps that don't like 2k, upgrading 98 to 2K on *any* machine that can handle it is worth the effort for the vastly improved stability.

I agree with the others that ram is an important factor. One machine I have installed win2k on was a PII266 with 192mb of ram, and it runs fine. If you've got less than 128mb of ram I would suggest you add some more before you install win2k, it does help improve performance. Hope this helps.
