Reverting back from XP to 98/95
I have a Gateway P2-350 system. When I purchased it it came with Win-95 and apps (Word, Works, etc.) preinstalled, with a free option to upgrade to 98. I assumed 98 was the better OS so I immediately upgraded.
All my games, DVD software, etc. worked fine except for the occasional 98 system lock-up. When XP came out I upgrade to it, looking for a more stable experience. While XP has been more stable, many of the older games (made for 95) will not play, DVD software requires an update, etc. I deleted the XP files that were suppose to give me the option to revert back to 98. Is there any other way of going back without starting over from scratch? Also, any opinions on which OS was better for speed & stability Win 95 or 98? Thanks |

The best was 98SE.

Win98SE would be your best choice. If you want to get a little complicated (since you're going to need to reformat anyway) you could dry a dual boot between 98SE and XP if you want both.

I hated 95 but I don't like 98 much better. But all I were running was hardware and software from that era I would choose 98SE. If you deleted the restore files you have no choice but to start over. It's just as well going back seems to have a negative impact on programs anyway. So you'll likely be happier with a clean install anyway.

Did you make sure that your video card is compat with XP? I had the same problem with XP but it was my video card. Simple solution buy a new video card...you will have to repair the XP files that you trashed.

Deleting system files is NEVER the appropriate course of action IMHO! I disagree with you Tuff! Win 98SE in my box has been a very reliable platform!

I didn't say it was bad I just said I didn't like it. I don't like any of the 9X OS's. Of the bunch I do think it's the best. In fact I do still install it on some notebooks for some companies.
I have probably had the best luck with Me, but it can be so flakey with drivers that I try to stay as far from it as I can. |
