winxp/truncated files

Have winxp pro and while i had a file open that held blk and wht photos of an ongoing collection of people and ww2 planes, there was a power surge and while system did bootup,it went thru a series of checking file system and somewhere along the way,i noticed it said something about "truncating files" infortunately,i didnt get a chance to see exactly what it was doing since it went by fast. went back to my folder, since i wasnt retouching anything, just browsing,id figured theyd be ok. they are gone, all, and to make matters worse they are not name but numbered.search did not return any of them. im sorry i know this is long, so question is what the heck is truncated and how could i un do this? any help will be highly appreciated
