Hi. first time posting. I am at a loss. The start button on the task bar does not work anymore. It worked Thursday. When you click on start, nothing happens. You can start programs from the desktop, but not from the start menu because the start menu wont even open up. Tried running a virus scan, but it seemed to take forever. Should I do a virus scan from dos or just a restore? Thanks.

I would advice doing a virus scan, some virii can put itself in your restore files. Therefore if it is a virus, a restore won't necessarily fix the problem.

Welcome to PCMechanic
It does sound like a virus, but you said you did a virus scan. Are your definitions up to date? If so, I would try scanreg /restore to a date before Thursday. What kind of changes have you made since Thusday, have you opened any unusual mail? |

do you get a menu when you right click on the start button?
if so, when you click on "open" do you get a window titled "start menu"? can you open any of the programs in the programs folder by clicking on their .exe file? |
