This has got me stumped.
My daughter came to me and said Word (in Office 97 on a PC with Win XP) would not do spell-checking for her anymore. I checked and she was right. In fact the Options tab for 'spelling and grammar' was dim and could not be selected. After trying a couple of ways to set options, I decided to reload the Office 97. That went OK but did not solve the problem. I copied her document over to the other PC (on Win98) and opened it up in Word. I got a warning that it had macros in it and did I want to enable or disable. There was no reason it should have had any macros in it, which got me immediately worried. I went in to look at the macros and did not see any. Then I went back to the other PC and ran Ad-aware to get spyware and Norton anti-virus full system scan for viruses. No viruses found and spyware found only the 6 or 8 kinds of junk. The last thing I tested is what really confused me. On the PC with XP on it. If used under my account, Word has spell-checker just like it should. If logged in under HER account, Word has no spell checker. So I don't understand what's happening. I think she may have downloaded or copied something that affected some settings, but what ? ------>>> Pat |

It sounds like she is set up with a "limited" acct on your PC and you have an administrator acct. I'm not sure why it works that way with spell check but I tested it out on my PC and it did the same thing.
Go to Start ~ Control Panel ~ User Accts and see what type of access she is set up with. |

Hotrod,
That's exactly the kind of account setup that I have at this point. She has a limited account and I have the Admin. I had an issue of screen savers being downloaded and installed and set her to limited. My guess is that the spell checker problem is unintended and may be a result of old software (Office 97). Could be a push toward upgrading software. |
