Help! Big problem with Grub boot loader
Ok i have a computer which i was dualbooting Linux redhat 8.1 and Windows XP Pro. I never use Linux so i asked someone what would be the best way to remove Linux and put that partitions space on my C:/ partition for windows. They told me to use partition magic which i did. So i deleted the Linux partitions and reallocated the space to the c:/ drive using Partition Magic. Well, apparently he forgot to add that i needed to remove Grub as well because now whenever i try to boot up my computer all i get is a screen that has the grub command line like so:
Grub> Is there anyway i can load up windows now or am i pretty much screwed? Is there anyway i can remove Grub Bootloader so its still not looking for my Linux partitions which i already removed? Any help would be greatly appreciated and hopefully this can be fixed because i have alot of stuff on my computer that would be a pain to get back if i have to format .

Even though im running winXP Pro does it matter if i boot up with a winME boot disk. Also my parents have a computer with Windows XP on it downstairs is there anyway i can get a boot disk off of it so i am able to get a DOS prompt, and if so how are the steps to do this? Sorry i dont know much about stuff like this hehe.

I use that command all the time on w2k and xp when removing traces of a dual boot so I can load something else.
Your best bet is to download a bootdisk file from Bootdisk.com and make a bootdisk from that. |

Ok i booted up from my windows XP cd and entered the recovery console like you said. However when i enter the recovery console i get the prompt c:/windows> and when i type fdisk /mbr it says that the command isnt recognized or invalid command or something of that nature. I also tried fdisk \mbr and it still wont work. Am i doing something wrong? Please help its really driving me up the wall hehe.

If it were me I would boot from the CD like I was going to install XP. I would proceed like I was going to install until it says there is another windows installation and asks if you want to try and reppair it. Select Yes and see if it can fix it itself.
I'm not talking about the one right when it first boots, I'm talking about later after it has checked your computer and you are basically up to the point where it asks if you want to format. |

I fixed it finally. I tried repairing windows but when it would retstart to start the repair it would say error loading OS again so it wasnt letting it get to the repair. Like the first guy said, i had a win98 boot disk laying around so booted up from my floppy and ftyped fdisk /mbr and it fixed the problem. Thanks for the help

erm I have the same Grub line staring at me now. Only I somehow changed the boot order to HDD, CDROM, FDD. I'm not even sure if the linux kernal ever was installed. Anyway to change boot order back so I can try and fix this with grub> ?
