Is there a general rule of thumb to see whether or not a program can be installed on XP; even if does not say if it is or isn't compatible with XP?

Make a Restore point and then install the software and try it.

XP has been out long enough most softmakers will have something about it on their websites. Whether it be a patch or a message saying it works fine or telling you it won't work. It's a good place to start.
