networking Xp with win98
I am trying link a win Xp laptop with a Win 98 deskyop using lan cards and a link cable.
I know the Lan cards are ok and I am using the correct cable As i have used it before on another network betweein two machines!. the trouble is, everytime i try to map network drive, it never sees the other machine in the workgroup. i have set manual ips on each machines 192.168.1.1 and 192.168.1.2 and subnet mask 255.255.255.0. I have checked the firewalls, I have run winxp network setup wizard......thats installed some files on a floppy to be put into the win98 machine.installed some files on that rebooted..still nothing.>! Any suggestions..I have linked a win2000 and win98 machine together before in about 20 minutes...is there something i am missing in Xp.?? |

You must login as someone on the 98 machine (ex. "bob" with password "computer") and creat an account on the XP machine that is identical to the one you are logged in as (bob & computer). That should solve your problem.

Yes they are both in the same work group and and sharing enabled.>!
Thats what i dont understand about it.!! I am going to try and swap out the desktops lan card as i noticed that the connection speed is only 10 mps. Shame i cant do the same in the laptop, as its built into it.!! |

The speed of your NICs are not your problem.
You should have: (Network Services layer) Client for Microsoft Networks (Transport Protocol layer) TCP/IP for internet connectivity NetBEUI non-routable protocol that functions great for your LAN IPX/SPX used thesedays for gameplay for older games (Hardware adapter layer) Dial-Up Adapter Cable/DSL interface Local Network interface Should look something like this: Client for Microsoft Networks 3Com Etherlink 10/100 PCI TX NIC (3C905b-TX) Dial-Up Adapter IPX/SPX Compatible protocol->3Com Etherlink 10/100 PCI TX NIC (3C905b-TX) NetBEUI->3Com Etherlink 10/100 PCI TX NIC (3C905b-TX) TCP/IP->3Com Etherlink 10/100 PCI TX NIC (3C905b-TX) TCP/IP->Dial-Up Adapter File and printer sharing for Microsoft Networks As far as I'm concerned I would enable DHCP and be done with the IP address assignments. Just my opinion.
