Audio problem win98se

Downloaded the windows crititlce updates today including windows media player series 9.

Now my puter has no sound at all?

I checked the slider in task bar, it is full up and not muted. Double clicked and none of the volume controls are muted or in the down position.

Checked Control Panel/Multimedia and everything seems ok there. Checked Device manager and everything looks ok there. All Devices are installed and working properly.

When I try to play a file, media player opens and the progress button moves and the timer shows it is playing, but no sound. (I also checked the small mute button at the bottom of the player.)

I checked my earphone connections and they are still good and firmly inplace. Also checked the on/off button and volume control on the earphone and they also are ok.

I just completed a reformate of the hd and have been reinstalling everything. I am sure the sound was working yesterday, but can not swear to it 100%. I don't use speakers, just a single earphone, because I am deaf in the left ear. I normally do not wear the earphone unless I want to hear something, such a music. I am sure I heard the windows start up music everytime I restarted during the installation process.

After downloading the updated player I tried to get it to play and have found I have no sound at all on the puter. Even the sounds for mouse clicks opening and closing documents is not working.

The Audio Device is, SiS 7012 wave. It came with the mobo and the drivers are on the mobo disk. Device Manager says it is installed and working properly.

Any ideas what might be wrong?

Try looking for an updated driver or removing the audio device from device manager and reinstalling it.

Fellow member AlwaysUp was having some trouble with Media Player 9, too. It does meniton is WMP9's ReadMe file that recent drivers might help overcome playback problems. That's a pretty big "might". However, it can't hurt to try. Your first choice for motherboard drivers might be it's manufacturer's site. Or you can try the SiS reference drivers over at http://download.sis.com/sisdlc/driver_select.jsp
Under Category, you'd enter "Audio"; nothing to enter for "Sub category; enter your chipset in the "Product" box"; and enter Win98se in the "OS" box. It will probably be either 7012_106.zip, 7018_114.zip, a12109.exe, or a18119.exe.

If hours of frustration later you still have no sound, you can also try uninstalling Media Player 9 and use either a competitor's product, or try an earlier version (I think AlwaysUp went back to version 7.1)

Best of luck

I got the problem solved today. I finally gave up and took the PC to a technician. He tried as well but couldn't get the thing to work.

He finally opened the thing and found that it had a sound card. It was not supposed to have a sound card. The audio was supposed to be on baord.

I checked my bill of sale when I got home, everything was listed except the sound card.

In anycase the tech, pulled the card, identified it as a Creative Ensonique 1370. He went to Creative and downloaded drivers and installed them. He must be related to all you guys and gals, he never charged me for doing it. I know where my PC will go if it ever needs repairs.

Thanks for the help Gary and redo, much appreciated.

Glad you got it worked out and it didn't cost you a fortune. Sounds like a friendly tech.
