could be your ram timing is set too aggressive. Also could have to do with vid oclock. Back off on the oclock settings and see if this helps.

Are you using any Power Management settings for the hard drive? If the drives are entering a power-saving mode after a set length of time, that delay would be them spinning up again.

(But I imagine you already checked that!)

My second guess is to make sure it's not a keyboard or mouse driver acting up (if you have a fancy cordless, or perhaps multimedia keyboard, etc - they can do flaky things). Might be interesting to see if the behavior is the same with a different mouse/keyboard.

And just to make sure nothing is wrong with the drive, can't hurt to run some diagnostics. Are you using one of the 8mb-buffer monsters?

[hmm . . . one more thing: might want to try one of the spyware tools over at http://www.spywareinfo.com to make sure a keyboard logger/sniffer program isn't spying on you - and causing those annoying delays too]

What brand and model of HD do you have?

I would run a full Scandisk and defrag in Safe Mode. Then use the HD diagnostic software.

You should also do a full anti-virus and check for Trojans with
The Cleaner

sometimes i experience lag when trying to log into e-mail ect. i just clear my internet history, delete temporary internet files, and also take a look at the "cookies" folder, and delete a few thousand of them. normally works for me, might take ages if u hav'ent done it in a while

I like DHB's idea of clearing the caches & cookies - it might be looking through those for recent entries & taking up time.

If that doesn't work, run the HD diags? - try a different mouse & keyboard?

Sounds like you built this one yourself. The drive diagnostics would be on either a floppy or a CD that came with the hard drive. Or, if you bought the drive OEM, you can download the diagnostics from the manufacturer's site (DataLifeGuard for WD's, Powermax for Maxtors, SeaTools for Seagates, etc). The downloaded executable creates a bootable floppy: the diagnostics run in DOS.

It sounds like this lag is only when you are typing text. Two things you might try. One, check how many fonts you have installed...more than 500 can foul things up like this. If you have a couple graphics programs and, like Word you can rack up the count pretty fast. If so, try removing any duplicates or ones you know you'ld never use.
The other thing to check is graphics acceleration. If you have this setting on full, it can mess up MSWorks...this might be something to toggle back just to see if this might apply in your case.
I always leave mine on full, but I have to drop the rate back to use any of the programs in Works (altho' Word runs fine with the full setting...)
this might be a totally different approach...let me know if it changes anything...

i dont have many fonts installed..

this is getting to be a very weird problem..

its not hardware specific because everything should suffer but its not.. my gaming and surfing go fine.. its jus that when i want to type into something it lags out..

I always carry out any suggestion from Mike Breck or Gary Routh, very stout fellows there. Go to your HDD manfacturer's website and download the utilities software onto a floppy diskette and then use it to run the diagnostic checkup for your hard drive, it is easier than it sounds.

Hi again

[and Hi, Tim Poet - does this forum make me look fat? ["stout" ] . . . probably all the sitting around typing!]

cRaZe - do you have a Logitech mouse running Mouse Ware? If so, you can also try uninstalling their driver & using just the builtin support in the OS - just to see if anything changes.

And - in that same vein - does it happen in Safe Mode?
. . . Gary

[don't worry, I won't type anymore for at least 8 hours - it's dreamtime for Los Angeles]

here's a "stout" question to ponder:
could you have done some damage to your videocard by overclocking, do you have another card to try to see if it makes a difference?

Hmmm . . . the login screen in Hotmail - that part might point to something. That might be that MS is doing the PassPort dance in the background. Do you have the "I am using a public computer" box checked (it uses 128bit encryption for a secure login, I believe)

It sure seems suspicious that it's just text boxes. Do you log out of PassPort when you leave Hotmail? If not, try that. PassPort might be trying to be helpful & remember things for you, but slowing everything down. But keyboard sniffers and loggers sure do a lot of the same activity. Did you try Search & Destroy, or AdAware, or The Cleaner, or ? A lot of folks say Search & Destroy is the most thorough tool of the bunch. I couldn't say for sure yet, since I haven't tried it yet.

Next time you're online, try going to different sites, and typing in entries in their "Search" dialog boxes, just to see if the lag disappears or not.

I hope you fix it soon, I start getting dumber and dumber the longer these threads go on
. . . Gary

I like "pulling the tooth" when it gets to be too much of a pain too!
let's hope it doesn't happen again!

Yep,

As the MS salesman said "A clean install fixes it all".

When you use a program like Drive Image or Ghost to a restore an image, it only takes minutes rather than hours.

You can have a nice, clean install any time you want.

Stoutly yours,

Mike.
