display settings keep changing

I have a problem with the display settings on an old Dell that runs Windows 95 (4.00.950 B) 32MB RAM
When I reboot, sometimes it will revert back to previous display settings. Other times, it is sitting idle, I'll hear a chirp noise and it will change the display settings back to the previous settings.
No viruses.
No problems in Device Manager
No errors messages on bootup
Checked Network settings
Updated display drivers
I'm trying to fix this for a friend and it has me stumped. Never seen this before.

In control panel/display properties/settings/advanced, there is a general tab.
Do you have a setting here for "After I change color settings" ?
(options:restart the computer before applying the new setting,
apply the new settings without restart
ask before applying the new settings
I would try toggling these settings to see it will help.
