Angry Fire Musicmatch slowdown

For a few weeks now, while I surf the net on my 56K dial-up I play music (MP3's) using musicmatch 7. My problem just started yesterday. Now when I'm both surfing and listening to music, the webpages have a high lag rate. I'm using Opera 7, running Win98SE, and just ran a defrag on my HDD's last night.

Why all of a sudden does musicmatch slow me down???

In addition, there are certian MP3's it won't allow me to burn onto a CD. Even if the MP3 is the only one on the playlist, it still won't burn.

Here's my specs:
AMD Athlon XP 1900+
Abit NV7-133R
Crucial PC2100 256MB
Abit Siluro GF4 TI4200 64MB
WD 80GB 7200rpm 8MB cache (2)
SB Live! 5.1

Musicmatch has webservices built in (auto update...) it could just be pinging it's own website as part of an update check...this would create more signal traffic and in turn slow your browser's ability to download...just a theory.
As far as not being able to burn certain mp3's goes, I would guess there is copyright code written into the mp3's that won't allow them to be copied to a cd...

I deselceted the auto update option already.

As for buring MP3's, it's only a select few that don't want to burn.

Here are some things I found out:
-When Musicmatch is ope, it knocks down my system resources about 20-25%.
-The CPU was running a little hot, so a vacuumed out all the dust that was clogging the heat sink.
-The delays occur when I'm not online too. Even when I'm just typing in MS Word, it's always behind by a word or two. It's not just in word, either. The whole system suffers a slowdown.
-As soon as I close out of Musicmatch, everything runs fine.

Here's they way my system resources have bee going:
Resources free at idle /Resources free with musicmatch
60%/35%
80%/64%
86%/65%

I managed to increase my resources from 60% to 86% by chhosing not to load a few things in msconfig.

So, what the heck is the problem?!?!??

your version of MusicMatch must be a resource hog.
I use it, but have an earlier version (5.10)...maybe you should find an earlier version to run...I just use it to play mp3's because it opens fast. There are much better burning programs out there, and lots more mp3 players that are free and don't take up so much resource.

If you don't run any anti-spyware programs, might be time to try one. http://www.spywareinfo.com has a bunch listed in their download section. Search & Destroy has been getting a lot of attention of late.

Assuming your drives are raid-striped, might make sure they test out OK.

You can probably knock quite a few more things from your background processes. RealPlayer/One, QuickTime, Instant Messengers, etc ...don't need to run every second of every day. They all seem to want to, though.

. . . Gary

[p.s. re: earlier versions: the same site that had the recent one (music match's own homepage) should also have older ones]

Thanks Gary

I managed to knock down what I had running to the bare essentials: NAV & my firewalls. I never like having too much running anyway.

Just FYI; my drive are not stripped. I'm just using the RAID IDE controllers just as my standard HDD controllers. I had a mirroring array set up at one time, but I needed the space of the other 80 gigger.

Thanks again for the info.

Just think if I could just revert to an earlier version of myself . . .

I might remember where I put those car keys more often!
Glad you got it fixed
