installing earthlink.. windows98

hi,

I'm trying to install earthlink 5.0 on the machine at work. It was running fine before, and the boss reformatted it, now it doesn't work.

When the program is installed, it asks for the username/pass, all that, then it dials and 800 number to the earthlink place. well, an error keeps coming up saying the remote machine refused connection. SO I cann up earthlink, and they say to make a dialup networking connection, and they give me a real access number, but I get the same error. they're saying the data cd earthlink came on is corrupted

I don't know where to go from here.. is it a modem config problem maybe?

Before you do anything go to control panel click on internet options then click on the advanced tab click on restore defaults. now try connecting.

Or it could be basiclly what earthlink told you. The set up files are corrupt.
You could uninstall then reinstall which may or may not work since the files on the cd may be corrupt. Try another set up cd or download the set up directly from thier web site and burn it to a disc.

tried reinstalling many times, but if the setup was corrupt, dial up network should still be working.

To use dialup Earthlink, you don't need any Earthlink software at all. Just create the "connectoid" in Dial-Up Networking (you can run the Network Wizard to do this, if you'd like). Did Earthlink support give you the necessary information? You need the IP addresses, and of course make sure that the username & password haven't been changed by your boss.

It could be something as simple as a changed password.

If you aren't sure whether you have a DSL or a dialup account, you'll need to determine that. Setting up the DSL is a bit different.

If you get a new Earthlink connectoid working, but your boss misses the Earthlink software: you could go to their site and install a recent version via download.

Best of luck

[p.s. ...might be a good idea to start again from scratch, with no Earthlink software involved. UnInstall it, try a run of RegClean to make sure it's gone, try removing and reinstalling your Dial-up Networking, and then try creating a "New Connection". You can download RegClean 4.1 (updated for Win98) at http://download.com.com/3000-2094-881470.html?tag=list
. . . and to remove/reinstall Dialup Networking, use Add/Remove in the Control panel ... Windows Setup...remove Network components, reboot, then add them back in.]
