Boom Defragmenting

When I do a defrag I get this message:

"Drive data has changed",

and then it starts over again, never even getting very far each time. What kinds of processes or programs could be doing this? The only thing I know could be a problem is NortonAV. Anything else?

Nearly any running background process can cause this. Rather than spending a lot of time figuring out which ones, you can either 1) use Task Manager (CTRL-ALT-DEL pressed just once) to end all background jobs except Explorer and Systray: then run your Defrag, or 2) reboot to Safe Mode and run the Defrag from there.

Best of luck

To avoid hitting CTRL-ALT-DEL a billion times to shut down background processes, download a program called "End it All". It does just that with a simple click.

Just put it out of its misery, eh Hal?

Safe mode's prbably the easiest way to go. Just press F8 during startup before it gets to the "loading windows" screen and select to boot in safe mode.

Good luck!

Mine does the same thing. I usually just go into "safe mode" and defrag that way.
