win 2000 upgrade???

hi
i have a system with a win 98 that i recently upgraded withe a abit kd& mobo, and the onboard sound card is givving me problems, everything works fine according to windows, but the only sound it wil produce is the ine in feed (no volume adjustment possible) and the pc speaker on the headset i hooked up to it.

a buddy of mine has the same mobo and he is running win 2000 without anny problems, that same buddy told me that the driver support for win 98 is no longer a given. so i was planning o upgraing to win 2000 the question is will every program that runs under 98 run under 2000 and will drivers that worked under 98 work under 2000???

thank you

If I remember correctly, there are some rare instances of some programs not running correctly under Win2K, but I can't say that I have ever actually run into such a problem personally. No, Win2K drivers are generally different from the Win98 drivers and will need to be updated accordingly.

corosus,
I went from Win98SE to W2k and the only thing I had to get were the drivers for my HP932C printer.
All my programs, games, etc work fine.

Go into control panel and click on the icon with the heads on it (User something), I can't recall the exact name of it right now, I'm on a Linux box. From there you should be able to add/delete accounts etc. HTH

Hi,

I'm assuming you have tried these drivers here:

yep i did, i am starting to think it might be a hardware problem,
but to test the sound i went to the sound menu, where you determine the win sounds, and when i press play the button changes to the stop button and does not change back. plus in win 98 (when i had the same problem) no medai that had sound ( like avi files) would play they would just keep loading => it's not just that i do not hear sound but it's not beeing played

When I loaded Win2000 for the first time, it would not recognize my ATI video card (using the supplied driver); I downloaded an updated driver from the MicroShaft web site and everything is just ducky now.
