You can (I think) choose open "any file "use almost any text editer as long as the file isnt to big But I don't think you'll be able to really read whats inside it

The .dat file is a text file. It would probably open in Notepad but I am not given the option of what to open it with so I figure Win98 has already associated that file with a program that unfortunately can't open it. I get the message, Open or Save to dicc. I hit Open but didn't see it opening anywhere. Then when I tried to delete it it said Access denied, file in use. Well I shut down everything, went back to it, and did delete it.
I have had similar problems when you open a unusual file type, it asks you which program you want to open it with. If you pick the wrong one, it seems you are not allowed to go back and change that association, especially if you have checked, Always associate this program with this type of file.

Hi all

See if this helps
http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=40218

Some Linux/Unix files use this extension, some programs use it as a generic "data" holder, but most often in Windows it's from Outlook/Outlook Express mail - and holds formatting options.

Hey dazedandconfused I don't think it's safe to delete DAT files I did a search on my computer and found afew were used by the system it self.
while some are text readable most are not and ether way I don't think you'd find anything useful in them normally (unless your debugging something)

just so you'd know

toomyg brings up a good point: there are two .dat files that you absolutely do not want to delete: user.dat and system.dat = these are main files for the Windows Registry. You can view the Registry files in Regedit, just be careful not to change anything by accident.
