Friday the 7th at approximately 8:30 my dad inserted a hard drive made by Maxtor and when we turned it on it froze at that point where is says Windos 98. After another couple trys my computer didn't even reach the first status page. Yesterday,Sunday 9th I took my computer to my friend/tech Sauron. He said it was hopeless although my original hard drive and cd-rom and floppy hopefully can be saved.......WE can't at the moment afford a new comp so I am using a Gateway G6-180..(really old comp)with only 2 gigs...
I don't want anything too expensive but something that has over 20 gig.....32 meg video card and a good sound card.....If you want more info on my burned computer pm Sauron...He will tell you.Thankx for your time. |

You can get a cheap computer with those specs. I got a similar computer for around $420 Canadian almost a year ago. How fast of a CPU are you looking for?

I don't really care for the speed as much as the gig in it. My dad found a 64 meg video card that costs like $68.00.Is that to expensive? I always wanted an awsome video card...But over 20 gig...maybe 30 or 40 gig...my friend Sauron is soooooooooooooooooooooooooooooooo lucky..he has 160 gig...: ( I wish I had that... I already have a monitor and all..All I need is a tower and the components.
Thanks for your help Pimpmaster.

chances are your motherboard just can't handle the newer style drive you have.
Gateway should be able to give you an idea of just what your model is capable of...all might not be lost, you are just limited to what hardware you can upgrade to. I don't think you "blew anything up" by putting the new drive in...did you try putting the old drive back just to see if the old configuration still works? but pimpmaster has a good point, you can get a pretty good system for cheap these days...even cheaper (and easier) than building from scratch if you are not real experienced. Here's a link to a site that will give you good comparative shopping for both components and complete systems: www.pricewatch.com good luck...and if you decide to build, we'll all be here to answer your head scratching ?'s..... |
