XP full vs upgrade

What is the real difference between the win xp professional upgrade, and the normal version?

The upgrade checks to make sure you have a previous version of windows. Either installed on the computer or the cd.

The upgrade is cheaper, but you can't do a clean install with it - kind of a down side.

You can do a clean install, you just need to have a windows cd of an earlier version to prove that you own it.

Are you referring to being able to do a clean install with the Upgrade CD?

Yes, it works with every version since Windows 95.

It will upgrade from Me just fine. If were running 95 you would have to buy the full version. Here is a page where the Upgrade Paths are listed.

Although you cannot "Upgrade" to XP from Win95, you can apparently do a "Clean Install" of XP from Win95 with the XP Upgrade disc.

http://www.aumha.org/a/xpupgrad.php

I've read of quite a few people doing this.

It just appears that MS don't go out of their way to publicise this.

Could it be, that they want users to buy the full version of XP or buy Win98/Me before upgrading to XP...

If you go to the link below you can get the full OEM version (not an upgrade) for less money than the Retail Upgrade package.

What is the difference in the two, upgrade and full oem? At the listed site the upgrade is more exspensive than the full oem.

The reason that the upgrade is more expensive than the full oem, is because the upgrade is retail and comes with a box and manual. Full oem doesn't.
