Problems w/ new XP PCs
Our network (Server: Win 2000 Server) has been working fine for two years w/ mostly Win98 and WinME workstations. Recently we upgraded to two XP stations.
When either of those XP stations try to access files on the Win2000 server, they get msgs (inconsistently) saying file is read only. The Win98 PCs don't get that message for those same files. This is a problem since if the XP users change the file, it must be saved under a different name and then we have to advise everybody that file x is now file y. Also they are unable to delete the original file, since to their PCs it is read-only. Does anyone know why XP behaves this way in this environment? |

No I haven't had that happen but I suspect something is a miss in your permissions. Generally XP computers have less networking issues not more.

Thanx for your input. We've checked the file permissions and that doesn't seem to be the problem. Any user on any non-XP machine can open them with no problem. The two users who now have XP were able to open these files when they had 98. Problem still appears with some switch between XP and Server2000.

Hi Lindens & Welcome to PCMECH;
I don't have an answer for your problem, but just noticed where your from. I'm about 150 mi. west of you, right off rt.30. I did a 2 week tour last summer with the Harrisburg crew as they were swamped with work and understaffed. I visited several large coorporate sites there in Mechanicsburg to service telcom troubles. 2 that I remember well were that humongous book club place and that big EDS place with the call center. I really liked the area, and even considerd putting in for a transfer to Harrisburg, Our office is actually in Lemoyne over there. Good to hear from a fellow Pennsylvaniaite!!
