Angry windows xp home profile problems

Hi,

when I boot up my computer it says something like:

"windows is unable to load local profile, possible causes might be insufficient security rights or a corupt local profile. "

So when I go into windows all of my shortcuts are missing, my favorite folder is empty and all entries into the url bar are cleared. Now whenever I change any setting or add shortcuts or favorites or anything, when windows restarts it returns to this default state.

How do I fix this?

edit: I created a new user, and the changes I make get correctly loaded when I log in. But my main user still has the problem of loading the local profile. Question: how could the local profile go corrupt when I didn't turn of the operating system improperly? or is it not corrupt but some security feature changed? is there any way to get my favorites back?

edit#2: I manually copied the favorites folder from my main user to the new user. So I got the favorites, but is there any way to tell what is corrupt about my main user's profile?
