Copying Drivers
Bud wants me to reformat his hd (has Win ME) and install Win98se. He has no drivers on disks for display, sound, joystick, modem. If I go into device manager I can get the respective drivers under "driver details", right? At least they're listed and I did a "find" for each. Are these the only drivers needed and would simply copying them to a floppy be adequate? I'm supposing the same drivers for use in ME would transfer nicely to Win98.

I dont think so when you install drivers the install scatters them all over in different directorys. example .dll in the dll folder and or system or system32 folders.
The best thing to do is go to the device manager and check the Manufacture and model of the drivers you will need and then download the drivers from the Manufacture web site and burn them to cd. Especially the modem and the sound card drivers. edge345 |

Go to the link and get the free download of WinDriver Backup an drun it on the computer. It will create a folder that you can copy with all the drivers that are installed on the computer.

Hi Sarge & all
I'd recommend Win98 or Win9x specifically labeled drivers, especially for the sound. With WinME the WDM drivers started to be used (WDM=Windows Driver Model). They are setup a bit differently. Some of the modems went to the WDM model with WinME too. I've always thought that Win98se is one of the most device friendly operating systems ever. It might even have most of the necessary drivers right there on the Windows disk. (they wouldn't be very recent, though). If the cards in that machine are older, heck, the Windows installation disk drivers might do just fine. Hope it all goes well . . . Gary [If Win98se is going to run great on his computer, WinMe really ought to be able to, also - maybe he just needs some of his drivers and configuration files tuned up a bit] |
