quick defragging question

just wondering, can i defragg my winxp professional computer w/o having to be in safe mode? I was just going to use the speed disk that came with norton systemworks 2003. is this good enough or should i use the windows xp defragger? also, do i need to turn off my firewall, screensaver etc. when defragging? just wondering cuz i thought i heard i could defrag w/o having to go into safe mode and don't have to turn off anything etc.
thanks.

Most people don't use safe mode to defrag. Unless it won't complete there's no need to.

I don't like Norton Programs very well but speed disk used to be pretty good program. I haven't used the last several versions so I don't know about it with XP.

Windows Defrag utility is ok, it's better than M$'s earlier ones. I use Diskeeper and like it a lot. XP's is a lite version of it.

You should probably exit out of anything that is working before you defrag. My computers defrag every night with my email still on and it doesn't hurt anything but it could slow it down or make it start over.

Just run it and see, if you have problems kill off the unnecessary stuff and try again. I do think it's a good idea to run chkdsk first if you never have.

Disable the screen saver, because if it starts it will make the defrag to start again.

In fact, every program that writes to the HD or reads from it will make the defrag process to restart. That is why you should exit all your programs, disconnect from the internet and disable the screen saver.

Nuc's way is probably the best but I do leave mine connected to the internet and do have a few things running. Diskeeper doesn't seem to have the same restart problems the older Windows defrag utilities did. I haven't noticed it with Windows XP's either but the only time I use it is for computers I build that aren't getting a copy of Diskeeper.
