Transfering Files
Well, I am finished building my new computer, and am trying to transfer about 18 gigs worth of mp3, movies, and pictures over to it using the XP file transfer wizard.
I have a serial cable, plugged into both com 1 ports, and seems to establish a connection alright, the first time i tried it got up to transferring the files and said it would take 480 hours, now obviously i don't have 20 days to sit and wait. So I tryed doing it with a smaller chunk, maybe 500 MB, and it said it would take 14 hours, something didn't seem right. I believe serial cables tranfer at a rate of 118kb/s, so it shouldn't take more than 40 hours. Now when I try it, it won;t even get passed the point of transfering the settings. Any suggestions on how to fix this? Thanks |

First, you are right: the serial port transfers at 115,200 bits per second, which is about 14 kilobytes per second. Overhead will reduce that even more, so transferring 18 gigs is going to take a long time.
Have you thought about putting the HD the data is on into your new PC and transferring the data that way? |
