New box, New HD, and New XP Pro
Hello all,
I have most of my components ( still waiting for Vid card) and have decided to put XP Pro on my Maxtor 80Gig HD. This is my first build and have a few questions about getting XP on my sys. 1) I had W98Se on my old system. I was told I could buy the XP pro upgrade only for my new system and not the full version. ( Note: I will not be using the old system .. ded ). 2) Do I just have to boot the new box and have the XP Pro upgrade disc in the CD drive or do I have to install W98SE on the HD then up grade to XP Pro? 3) ..or am I off base here and should just get the full XP verison? I have been told different things by different folks and I'm a bit confused. Any help would be appreciated. System: Asus P4G8x 2.4Gig 512M 2700 80 Gig Maxtor 7200 8mb cache Toshiba DVD/CDRW Antec case / 430W PS ATI AIW 9700 Pro Thanks in Advance, David |

Get full version (didn't even know an upgrade version existed), upon first boot go into BIOS and set boot sequence to boot from CD-Rom as first boot device, save and exit BIOS after having put XP CD-Rom in and upon boot Installation will be a piece of cake. Good luck.
Remember to change back your BIOS boot sequence to desired setup after OS installation. |

Actually if you have your win98se disk then you can install fresh clean install of xp with the xp upgrade version disk. You still boot as normal from the xp cd and when the upgrade version cd gets to the point of scanning your system for previoius qualifying version of windows and does not find it, it will allow you to put your win98se disk in so it can verify it. After that you put xp cd back in and your on your way, just don't loose that cd key. If I were in your place though, I would get the full OEM version which is that same cost as upgrade version retail. Probably what your friend was thinking that you wanted to not start from scratch and loose everything is why he must have told you to only get upgrade version. I have full version and if run from windows it still gives me the option to upgrade too. Hope this makes sense to you.
