I had read that 2000 Pro can be used for a server. Could someone point me in the direction of where I might get more information on how this works and how to setup a server? This will be my first time for setting up a server. The kind of server I need is a file server. Thanks in advance.

Just set it up as you normally would on a network and set up the user permissions. Then everyone stores their stuff to the server. You could even set up a folder shortcut on your desktop to a folder on the server to act as a kind of home directory.
www.practicallynetworked.com An excellent site for research. |

Do you think that could also work on a WAN? I want to link two not for profit offices in Chicago and we're talking no budget when it comes to a not for profit orgs

You would need a static WAN IP Address, then set up a VPN. Sure it can be done. 2k pro can do most things except act as a domain controller.

You will be limited though to 10 connections per server. To connect more you`ll need Windows 2000 Server.
You should be able to get around that by setting up a secondary server though. |
