Win 2K/ XP home dual boot system
I temporarily hooked up my Win2K/XP home edition box, today to my LinkSys BEFSR41 router and did a manual configuration for my network (NO WIZARDS). And just aa GLC and a few others told me, it was easily managed without either OS trying to "take control" of my network! Went into Windows update and downloaded critical updates for each OS. I did not how ever do the SP3 for Windows 2K yet. Are all critical updates required? Should any SP be downloaded? Also activated XP.

For what it is worth. I am running a dual boot XP pro and win2k pro networked with a shared DSL connection. Both os share the connection equally well with the other computer. I have installed both XP SP1 and 2K SP3 with no problems whatsoever.

Just a quick question. What is the reason to dual boot Win 2K and XP? As far as it is my understanding they are pretty much identical in structure, with XP using a pretty much useless GUI which is more geared towards the casual user then the professional. What am I missing?
As far as service packs, you should read the provided documentation for each pack and make sure that it fixes problems that are problem areas on your machine. If you don't use IIS or Outlook you might produce more problems installing the SP then you might fix. |

I expect some would find it a little hard to comprehend, but I have had a great time helping family and friends with their problems both hardware and OS related. I have extensive knowledge with all things 9x, but when navigating and using the more business oriented Win 2K and XP I have to physically get in the driver's seat of their XP boxes to figure out anything. So in a nutshell it is for the experience. At work we still use NT 4.0 and although I am no admin I serve as the guy that local users come to for help. If I don't know it, I know where to find out. Experience is the best teacher.
Take care in questioning why folks do as they do, kbert777. My experience is that weather you might agree or not, a person ALWAYS has a pretty good reason for doing something! It just might not fit your own logic.

AlwaysUp, it is beyond me how you can turn a simple question into a personal attack! I asked a simple question, without any judgement against your knowledge or intentions, strictly out of personal reasons.
As an MCSA I get confronted with problems like your SP issue everyday, just I had never seen a dualboot of 2K and XP. The reason that I even asked is that the MMC's in 2K and XP are almost 100% identical, so from a technicians point of view there should be only very minor differences. Not everything has to fit within the constrains of my own logic, that's why I am asking questions, because there might be a slim chance that even I overlooked something! My intentions were to help you with your question about SP's. The way your question was worded seam to show to me that you are not too familiar with Patch Applications and Security Issues. |

kbert777, I am in shock! How might you have interpreted my response as a personal attack? You questioned my choice to dual boot these OS's due to your extensive knowledge of them; you see no reason to do this, right? I simply remind the extremely talented, that some folks have practical reasons to their choices that may not have occurred to them. I don't have your knowledge. Therefore I post questions to increase my knowledge. I appreciate your response and extend my apologies.
You might note, however, that I am not the only one around that dual boots these OS's. |

AlwaysUp, your post caught my attention because of the combination, that's why I asked a simple question.
I am glad you didn't have a problem answering it, I just do not like to be insulted. If dualbooting 2K/XP serves a purpose for you, more power to you, as far as I am concerned they are close enough to neglect XP (that's my opinion, in case you are wondering, just a hint, there is no commercial version of XP and there won't be). Did I call you stupid because of the choice you made? I don't think so! All I wanted to know is in which situation a dualboot 2K/XP might come in handy. |

Plus, as I've found out, XP is awesome for gaming. I now use it for all of my heavy-duty-resource-hogging games.

I gave my answer. Sorry you were insulted. Let's us agree to have differing opinions and leave it at that, ok?
