W2K programs slow to load
My work PC is a PII 233Mhz 256MB running Windows 2000 & 98SE with 20GB HD split in 5 partitions. None of the partitions is more than 60% full. Have noticed lately that in W2K certain (not all) programs are very slow to load, in particular Office 97 (Excel, Word). I re-installed Office97 but no great change. Also some of the apps. in the System Tray have a habit of disappearing. I defrag regularly & scan for Viruses. Have just installed RAMIdle & see that with no apps. running there is approx. 150-160MB RAM free, this doesn’t seem to change much when I load a couple of apps (if anything the free RAM increases!). Haven’t noticed any funnies on the h/w side other than the Power Supply appears to be noisy at startup but then settles down.
No problem with the load times for Office97 under the W98SE partition. Having just rebooted to W2K after checking W98, all is back to normal but I am fairly sure that some time during the day, the system will deteriorate again.

Try defragging your partitions. That may help.

in 2000 you may want to check the size of your paging file and make sure that your optimized for applications in the performance options under the advanced tab in my computer properties.
If you have anti-virus software on the PC I have noticed in my work with 2000 that it can slow down applications because it scans everything before it lets it open. You may want to try and look at your antivirus settings to see if there is a way to keep it from scanning everything you open. |

Thanks v much for the replies. I do defrag regularly & I'll take a look at the Paging File & AV options.
As it's only an intermittent problem, I'm quite happy to live with it for the time being, as I can't seem to find any one set of circumstances when the apps. load slowly. |

My Page File is set at 500MB on the D: drive which is where Windows is installed. E: has the data and F: programs. (C: has Win98SE). I notice that Windows recommends that the Page File is NOT installed on the system file partition and it proposes a size of 382MB. My Registry file size is 15MB. Any suggestions to improve this configuration?

You've run an up to date virus scan and all is clear.
I don't like the fact that your icons are disappearing from systray. If this is an old installation of W2K you might consider a nice fresh install. I usually do this once a year anyway to get rid of the debris. HTH |

Thanks Mike - the W2K installation is reasonably new. Any suggestions on my Page File situation?
