Connecting to internet via cable modem
My friend has a laptop running XP. He can connect at uni via the university network. However he tried connecting via a friends cable modem after installing all the drivers etc and has problems. He can connect to MSN Messenger but when he tries to connect to the internet he gets access denied screen saying not on access denied by access control list or something similar. How can he get round this?? Any ideas what is causing it?

Yeah I thought it was really weird as well. I know how to check to see if the connection is using DHCP but if it is not, how do I change it to using DHCP. Thanks for the reply.

In XP go to the Network Connections and make a new connection.

In the network card properties dialogue, clkick the option to obtain an Ip address automatically, and obtain dns info automatically. Then reboot.

You have to call your cable network to switch it on for your friend laptop. because if you use another network card which is not the same as you registerd before, then they have to make way for the new nic card.

You'll probably have to call the cable ISP and give them the mac address of the laptop's nic. That's usually how they control access to their network.

So what ya'll are saying is that cable companies only allow 1 machine to log on via broadband?. Whats the point in having broadband then.

To share the broadband connection you'll need a router.

Computers talk to router. Router talks to ISP. ISP only has one talking to it eventhough several computers are talking to the router and sharing bandwidth.
