Bad WINME CD?

Hey everybody,

Talking to a buddy online who wants to format his DELL and install Windows ME. He dos not have a restore CD. So I told him to insert the CD and boot up into DOS. So he did and I told him to type in cd D:\, so h did and was in his D drive. So then I told him to type in Format C: and it says bad command or file name. So then I tell him to try to find FORMAT, so he does and it's in D:\win9x. So I tell him to type in cd D:\win9x, so he is now in D:\win9x, and I tell him to type in Format C: and he gets the same error mesage.

Could he have a bad CD? Or is he doing anything wrong?

[I know you can reformat by loading WIN ME setup. But I am wondering how come he wasn't able to format by typing in th command at the command prompt?]

[Talked to NuclearKrusder about it, and he said WIN ME does not allow you to format like that(I kinda figured that but wasn't sure). So that pretty much answers my queston, WIN ME cannot use that FORMAT command]

Hi Matt

If his Dell has a floppy drive, he can boot with a Win98 bootdisk and format from there. Then remove that bootdisk & install WinMe from the CD. (& of course, if he doesn't have a bootdisk, he can go to http://www.bootdisk.com)

Hope that works

AFAIK Win ME no longer comes with DOS like W98, so you can't run DOS commands.

I learned that when I tried to run a Scanreg at the command prompt.

The funny thing is that ME itself told me to run Scanreg at the command promt! Go figure. Another reason why I hate ME.

Funny things go wrong in a few million lines of code

Nuke & Matt: maybe Hal will help us out with how to work with WinMe for this sort of situation. I don't see WinMe much, I only built a few systems with it (and I haven't got to play with them since) . . . and there aren't any WinMe machines here at the lab...

The Win98 floppy should work, but I suppose it's not very elegant. There probably is a way in WinMe, but it might be hidden away for Hal to uncover for us
