Windows XP gaming probs

I just put togeather a computer pentium 4 with a radeon 9700 pro vid card and installed windows XP. everything seems to be fine but i cant play games. one of them is brand new C&C generals and ive also tried demo's like splinter cell ect. I have directX 8.1 installed. It loads up but right when it starts to go in game where it resizes the resolution it cuts off and freezes up. ive reinstalled these games 3 times now and im stumped any help on this would be really appreciated.

There is a hotfix that sounds like it is for your problem on Windows Update. Would be worth installing it to see.
