need some guidance
well i finally made the upgrade from win 98 se to win xp pro and I am having a few issues and was wondering if someone can show me the light. The first problem i have is reinstalling norton AV after uninstalling norton utilities. The utilities loads but the AV portion of the program refuses to install, i've even tried just installing AV and i end up getting an error message....the problem is that everything worked peachy keen running under 98. The other main problem i have is accessing certain sites such as espn.com or having IE not work properly when trying to d/l the 1.a patch from mickeysoft. I do have sp 1 installed, but i'm a newb to xp and was wondering what i am doing wrong and what can i do for some performance tweaks and such to have my box do what it used to do. specs as follows.... amd 800mhz socket a running on a asus k133 board with 512 megs o ram, 20 gig hard drive, plextor 16/10/40, pioneer 12x dvd, and sblaster live cheapy version...

Hi there,
Did you upgrade over the previous W98 installation or did you do a fresh install? What is your version of NAV?

Is there a posibility you reformat and do a fresh install of XP? Without installing 98 at all?
I think that the trash left by W98 is the cause of your problems. |

that would be the ideal thing except that i have no way to back up my data unless i watned to use a few hundred cdr's...i have about 6 gigs of mp3's and another 6 or so in movies that i've collected so my only real option would be to wait until i get a new drive which i may do so this week and transfer my data...

Yup. That is the way to go.
And when you get the new HD, make more than one partition so this situation won't happen again. |

I had similar problems with Norton when I upgraded from 98 to XP. Formatted and did a clean XP install and no more Norton Problems.

You don't need to lose all your stuff...Any data you have can be kept, even on the same partition, you don't even need to format.
There's a real easy way to get a fresh install of XP on there, and then install programs from scratch, so you don't have all the 98 garbage interfereing. |
