XP nag
i just installed windows 2000 on my computer. I later tried upgrading to Xp but later found out my mobo will not support it without a bios fix. So right now everytime i boot up my machine it'll give me two choices to go to 2k or xp setup. I'd like to get rid of the xp setup. how would i go about that ?
thanks in advance |

My question is why dual boot with 2k and XP, both are basically the same with XP having a few more features. BUt from a software compatability standpoint you gain nothing. A more usefule dual boot would be 2k and 98se or xp and 98se. At least this would give you the ability to run older dos based software. |

I don't think he is trying to dual boot. He tried to upgrade and the upgrade went wrong, Now his boot manager is confused and is still looking for the setup disk to finish the upgrade. fdisk/mbr should do the trick. Personally I would do the bios flash and install XP from scratch and aviod the upgrade process entirely.

fdisk/mbr should do the trick, but also you can go into Windows 2K and alter the boot.ini file there. Just basically remove the line, or in device manager, under advanced, startup and recovery, and set the default operating system to Windows 2000.

You'll have to boot from the win2k cd.
To do this reboot and go into your BIOS and set the first boot device to your cdrom, then reboot. When you reboot you'll have to watch your screen to see when it says "To boot from cdrom hit any key" when that comes up hit any key and let the win2k disk load. When it is finished loading you'll have a few choices to make. You want to choose "To repair win2k installation with the recovery console press R" Once this is finished loading it will ask you wich instalation you want to repair. Enter the number of the instalation and press enter. Then it will ask for your administrator password, type that here and hit enter. If you did not enter an administrator password just hit enter. Once you are at the command prompt "C:\WINDOWS or C:\WINNT" I forget wich with win2k, type in FIXBOOT You'll be asked if your sure you want to rewrite a new bootsector, enter yes. This should replace your missing NTLDR file. If this does'nt work you can put a copy of NTLDR onto a floppy disk and copy it to the root of your C: drive or whatever your boot drive may be. NTLDR can be found in the i386 folder on your instalation cd. Hope this helps you out. db |
