on board audio driver problems

I recently reinstalled windows XP on my machine and erased all the old stuff. Now i cant get the on board sound on the mo bo to work. Its an advent ac97 sound on an sis961 chipset. I can only find linux drivers for it and windows driver searches dont find anything..The mo bo book and disk i no longer have as it was all lost when i moved. It says there are no drivers for the multimedia device..any ideas anyone?

Have you tried doing a search for online manuals? I would start by doing a google search or the website of the manufacturer of your mobo, they usually have online manuals you can D/L, or you can try checking thier FAQ's page on the site, also try typing your problem into any search engine, I would recommend google, try typing something like "Advent ac97 sound problems", chances are someone has had the same exact problem as you. Or you can just wait for one of the more advanced members to help you, someone usually has an answer for someone else's problem.

I hope that helps

Go to the motherboard manufacturer's website and check the download page. The sound drivers for your motherboard should be there.

Cool

and then you may have to manually insert the drivers into the right driver cache file, which was the case here, after moving from XPpro tp W2Kpro. You see, bought a pre-built puter and all the drivers, codecs, everything was imbedded in the XP recovery partition and not very accessible. The pre-built boxes want you to stay in their puter prisons and it is a chore breaking out but the freedom is GREAT! I went straight to metacrawler search, typed in AC97 and got loads of info.
