IE Content Advisor

Some one in household set up the Content advisor in IE 6 and didn't remember password. Bad break for him as his sister is ready to kill him! Is there someplace to remove or is to restore system only option? I hate to do the latter but can.

Only trying to save my son's butt !

Hi JLSwany, Welcome to PCMECH!

I checked out Microsoft's website for this problem, it was actually the first article in thier Internet Explorer 6 FAQ's section

Turns out there is a way to fix this little problem, you have to call microsoft. Here is a link to their website, all you have to do is click on that blue link in the middle of the page, and it will give you a phone number to call. It also says tech support charges may apply *unless* and I quote from the page here: "In special cases, charges that are normally incurred for support calls may be canceled, if a Microsoft Support Professional determines that only a password reset will resolve your problem. Normal support costs will apply to additional support questions and issues that do not qualify for the specific password reset in question. " Being that the only way they list to actually salve your problem is too call them, they shouldnt charge you, but I could be wrong, thats just the way it looks to me since they give you no advice or instructions to do it yourself.

I hope that helps

You can try searching your C drive for the ratings.pol file and rename it to ratings.old reboot the system and try running IE.

JLSwany,
ratings.pol is found in the registry.
you can find it under HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE / software / microsoft / windows / current version / policies / ratings the ratings.pol should show up in the right hand pane. If not make sure you have "show all files" checked in "view files".

hope this helps you out.

Moderator Note: While the information from Microsoft is fine, I would encourage you to read this thread - http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=56365
regarding PCMech's policy regarding bypassing passwords as explained in the FAQ (http://forum.pcmech.com/misc.php?s=s=&action=faq).
