Wierd folder name in Win 2K....
I have Win 2K and Win XP home edition dual booted on two separate physical hdd's. In Win 2K it appears that there is a folder with what look to be system files, that has a big long string of alpha numeric characters as the Folder name. What's that all about? Is this just a quirk? Should I rename this funky folder?

Where is the folder located exactly?
Without knowing much about it, I would guess it is probably a backup of some sort. I wouldn't do anything about it. |

It is in the root drive of D:\
If I knew how to post a screenshot I would. Anybody got down and dirty directions to do a screenshot in a post? |

Hit Print Screen, open MS Paint, Edit > Paste, save as a JPG to reduce the file size. When you post, select your attachment.

Why not just copy and paste the name of the folder so we have an idea of what you`re looking at?
"a big long string of alpha numeric characters " doesn`t help much..

dir > dir.txt will give you a text file of the directory.

Still doesn`t tell us much. Have you right clicked and checked properties to see when it was created? opened it to see what is in it?
Check security to see who has permissions and who the owner is. |

I have opened it and as I said above, it looks to be system files. I will look to see when it was made.

Are you by chance running fat32? I have seen that folder or similar on fat32 systems, however not on systems running ntfs. As to what it does I see that folder after an update to sp2 / sp3 [only on fat32 systems]

No, not FAT32; NTFS. I have only done the SP1 on Win 2K as I have a SP3 that pops up upon Windows Update, although I have not installed this SP as yet.

I am at a loss as to why you have that folder. It has been some time since I have installed sp1 so I cannot remember if it is there with ntfs. If it works ok I would leave it alone.

Do you think renaming it would cause a problem?

Ok did some more checking. I think [not absolutely sure] it contains the uninstall files for your service pack. When you installed sp1 or whichever sp and selected the option to archive so as to be able to uninstall that is where the uninstall information is stored. It will have system files [your old ones] in case you want to revert back to a previous installation. As to renaming, if you do not want to uninstall it should not be a problem.
