I am running winxp pro and i have two drives set as primary master(20gig/4gig free space) and slave(40gig/2gig free space). My slave drive has at least 37 gig worth of MP3's and when I click on this one folder it locks up. I don't even have to go in the folder to make it lock up. I just have to select it and the pc locks up and I have to reboot. I just noticed this yesterday. Its like its a bad sector or something on the harddrive. I know for a fact I was able to access to the folder before plenty of times. I have tried scandisk and nothing. What should I do...

1. Have you scanned it with any virus software ?
2. You could create a new folder and try moving your MP3's into the new folder in dos. 3. If you have it try to run the XP service pack to see if that helps. |

I haven't scanned it with a virus software, but I do have NAV 2003 corporate edition with the latest DATs. I haven't tried to access the MP3 folder through the command prompt, I think I will try that. I also have the latest patch and SP's for my system. Is there anything else I can try??????

Some common things that you might try are:
(a) Is it an NTFS drive? If so check the security permissions of the folder to see if you are allowed complete access (b) What view is it set on? Windows X(tra-cra)P's new and improved interface and features also have cataloguing of media files. Your system might be taking time if there are tons of media files like video, audio, pix etc; and windows is either reading information from those files (like ID3 tags) or doing lame things to justify its XP name - like generating thumbnails of video files (!!) Try setting it on list view and see if it helps. (c) If you have any HTML or other customizations to the folder remove it and see. (d) Running a chkdsk on the drive will help (e) Running defragmentations can also help (f) check to see your list of programs for something that might be accessing the folder (g) try turning off fast file search (or drive indexing) or disk restore for that drive to see if access time improves. |
