Question xcel file gets slower as size grows problem

Has a data entry operator, who 's working on a Excel file, on a Win95, P 1-233 MHZ Machine, 64MB SD PC100 RAM.
Office 2000 SBE Edition

As she squeeqes data month after month in just a single file, she keeps complaining, when she scrolls up or down , it gets a bit slow.
Another problem, when she tries to enter a single row, she gets this error, cannot be done.....

I notice the file size was 1.3 MB , on a network share, on A NT 4.0 Server.

Any one have this experience? Or do I need any office patch ?

Thanks in advance !

Your low on memory resources. You can try to add more memory to this box which could be a quick fix. But I believe a new computer is the way to go.

I was afraid of that.....as I've run out of RAM. These legacy RAM are pretty expensive & not easy to find & ..sometimes I felt it isn't worth it , felt like being 'slaughtered' to pay that kind of money

Open the spreadsheet and hit End then Home keys. This will take you to the lowest right hand corner of the spreadsheet. "If" this spot is WAY lower than the last line/column, delete the extra lines and or columns.

In other words, if you go to a blank spreadsheet and go to cell IV65636 and enter one digit and save...the spreadsheet will be very large...

Try copying each sheet to a new workbook and then save the new workbook.

We see this with shared workbooks quite a bit. We copy the sheets to a new workbook and the new file size is drastically smaller. I'm not sure why this is but it works for us.

Thanks EzyStvy, tried the steps, and indeed, found one vertical line still lingering at the bottom.

Have told the operator the solution. I'm relieved to be able to resolve the problem and learn something today

Your're the best !!!

Also just to note, I believe that Excel (97 at least) cannot access more than about 2Mb of memory at once.

Therefore, it probably won't help to add more physical RAM to the machine.

A faster processor would help though!

I cannot find the reference for this, and I don't know if it applies to Excel 2000 on.

David.
