Modem disconnects in XP

Hi,
Ok I have not paid up for DSL for home but I do have it at work.
I just had a new computer built with XP-Pro. I am having an issue with my dial up and cannot seem to get it solved. Once I dial in the connection terminates after a few minutes or when I try to download software. It took 5 reconnects to get winzip downloaded. How do I correct this? I have changed the shut down to never, is it the speed? Should I lower it from the 115200? I don' know my way around XP as well as Win 98. But it is very annoying that it automatically terminates constantly. Could it be the firewall? Should I turn it off?

Thanks for anyones help.
Wendy
