usb in xp
i have an older NEC READY system with a pentium III 450mhz processor in it, with 2 built in usb ports that worked with win98 and win2000, but since upgrading to windows xp all i get in the usb controllers section of my device manager is a "universal serial bus (usb) controller" that has a yellow exclaimation point by it. so when i plug in devices they don't power up or get recognized. i don't remember if more than that is supposed to appear in the usb section but all i get is that one thing. i thought maybe my ports were dead, so i went and bought a 4 port pci card and put it in, and windows just added 4 more controllers like the one above, all being generic and all having an exclaimation point by them. i've checked my bios and there's no setup in there for usb, just a legacy usb keyboad option, and a option that says "plug and play O/S?" which is selected yes. i've even upgraded my bios to a version that was developed just recently. i have a webcam and have a scanner i used to use under 98 that i'd desparately like to get working. is there any way to get these things working at all? any drivers i can download to help my usb work with win xp, or any settings i can change in xp to get this to work? PLEASE HELP!!

Delete those devices from Device Manager, and then reboot. Windows will hopefully detect the hardware and correctly configure it. If that doesn't work, come back.

iwish it were that simple, but i've done that a million times, always puts the same thing back in it's place. in fact i've tried just about every angle i can think of, such as looking for software that could resolve it, and bios patches

Try looking for driver updates for the motherboard.

Go to google and search for NEC USB Drivers, download the driver for Win2k or XP. Make a system Restore point so that if they cause problems you can restore back to the point before you installed them. (Remember F8 to start in safe mode)
Once you have downloaded them install them clicking on continue when it says that the drivers are unsigned and do this everytime the box comes up. I had something like this a while back with a USB expansion card. |

every time i remove it and windows finds new hardware it installs a usb controller and 'says' it found an intel pci to usb converter but it's never in the device manager....it says both of those in the taskbar, then when it gets done a window pops up saying windows found the following hardware but had an error during installation and lists the usb controller and then says that the reason it isn't set up right is because "the data is invalid".
