I just got all of my parts for a new server/main computer. I have a Intel 845 board with a P4 2.0Ghz 512MB DDR RAM a 40GB HD and a 120GB HD and a whole bunch of other stuff that doesnt really matter right now... Anyways.. I am looking to use this as a 1. File Server
2. Back up Server (more then 2 clients) 3. Web hosting server My Friend is really good with Linux and wants me to run Red Hat. I am all for Linux, not good at it but love the stable and functional OS. I am unfortunitly a windows man. My first thought was to run Windows 2000 because I know I could get all of my needs taken care of with it. I don't like the idea of windows running on my server being unstable and being WINDOWS. Any suggestions would be much appreciated |

I am also chained to Windows, but I'll tell you something. I currently run a server myself. It's now running Red Hat 8.0 Linux. I have had Linux for over two years now, never have to reboot the thing, never have to worry about it, it just plain works, now here's the kicker... you would have thought that in two years I would have learned something about it... but it runs so damn good that I haven't learned a thing! Go for the Linux and never have to worry about it.

Linux all the way. And since your friend is good with it, if you ever run into any problems I'm sure he'll help you sort them out.

Any plans for collaborative messaging using outlook? If so I dont think linux will work for you. If not then go for it.

What you want to do is what Linux does best. Save some money and get a first rate product to boot.

My first thought was to just have my friend help me set up linux and then I would never have to deal with Win2000 problems I will just need to find the linux apps out there, haven't really looked yet. Thanks for all your suggestions I'm sure I will be posting more on this server after it's up and running
