Top Technician Needed

I am 18 years old and I am a paid part time computer technician at a high school. We just got some new Compaq Evo Workstations with Windows XP installed on them. They are Pentium 4 1.8 GHZ with 512 megabytes of Nanya PC2100 DDRRAM installed on them. But for some unknown reason whenever a program that the school uses which is DOS based by the way, is running, the whole system is slowed down significantly. Whenever this DOS program is running and a staff member is trying to open Internet Explorer or some other program, it takes about 20 seconds or so for it to open. When the DOS program is closed, the computer runs great. I think there is a conflict between this DOS program and Windows XP. Previous operating systems that have run this program have had no such problem ever. A company that fixes computers that I cannot fix, have no solution either. They are going to send their Senior Technicians very soon to see if they can resolve it. But I would rather figure it out myself. I tried installing a Windows XP Service Pack but it did not fix the problem either. Does anyone out there have any resolutions to this problem?

What is the DOS program? Some can made to work with XP, unfortunately there are many that won't.

Have you tried setting the compatibility mode to 95 or 98?

I've had plenty of problems with schools, slightly old educational progams and windows XP. In many cases there is no solution, and in all my cases I just made the pcs dual bootable with xp and 98se ,so they could get the best of both worlds.Everyone's happy!
