It's all the info needed to restore the system files to their previous state as defined by the date of a Restore Point in System Restore.
If you don't want to use System Restore, and delete the file, right click My Computer, select Properties, System Restore tab, and turn it off.

Ah, ok. Thanks.

I just selected the option to not show system hidden files and the folder disappeared. I definitely want the system restore feature so I'll be leaving that folder alone.

I agree Nuc, I know it's popular to turn it off but it's a nice thing to have. I only run it on my C: drive and I wouldn't consider turning it off.

reboot
All of my hard drives, five physical and then partitioned from C: to O: has a System Volume Information folder on it. They are all accessible except for the O: drive where "Access is denied". The latest date on a file in all of them is 01/05/03 except for M: which is today 10/05/03, O: is of course unknown. Does this mean they all all a waste of space except for M: and possibly O:. Since I can't access O: to delete it does this probably mean that it is being used? Dave

I just looked at TUF's response again and as they contain the drive information for the partition they are located on I can see they are being used. Dave

I just turned off System Restore for my O: drive, rebooted and I still can not access the System Volume Information folder to delete it or even look at it, any advice? Dave

Try it in Safe Mode. You should be able to get rid of those files if you've disabled SysRestore.

I can't delete the O: System Volume Information Folder no matter how I try. Tried Safe Mode - No luck, I then started in Safe Mode with just the c:\ prompt and tried to delete the Directory, no access, then used Attrib using -h -a -s -h to make the directory accessible, "No access" etc. etc.. My best guess it is a corrupt directory/file and the only way I am going to delete it is to reformat O: and start over.
