win (*SE, Verizon DSL, & Norton Internet Security
This problem's driving me nuts! I am trying to set up Norton Internet Security on a friends computer running Windows 98 SE. The computer will connect just fine to the net before I install NIS, but after I install we can't get pages to load, and mail can't be checked. NIS's Live Update works just fine though. I've tried reinstalling half a dozen times, and checked Symantecs website for their fixes, but nothing works. Have tried freeing up system resources by limiting startup items, done full virus scan, cleared temporary internet files, defragged, changed program loading times, and made sure I've permitted access to IE and Mozilla, etc. Have tried both Internet Explorer and Mozilla, and neither browser works. We are definitely getting an online connection though, as connection status box show sent and received. Has anyone here with Verizon DSL ever gotten NIS to work in 98? I have it in my XP machine and it works just fine. The machine in question is an older Gateway with 400 MHz Celeron, and 256 MB memory (just upgraded for her)
Off to try installing it on another 98 machine I have here, to see if it's just that machine's problem.....but would appreciate any suggestions. Verizon tech surrport told her it wasn't a problem with their software, and live tech support from Symantec is more than she can afford. Thanks in advance! |

hi colombo
I've never used nis, so I can't offer any help with specifics for the program. If you can connect then it's not the modem, if everything runs ok before the install then it's got to be the program or a conflict it's creating. I would try uninstalling Mozilla and see what happens...also I would scour the settings and choices within niv to see if there is something you might have missed...you could also try repairing IE through add/remove programs... hope this helps |

I talked with a friend who has used NIS about your problem His only suggestion was to check the settings specifically for the firewall. There should be general options and a separate set for the firewall. This should allow both of your browsers. |

Thanks for the replies. I have tried all of the above, and it hasn't worked. I'm going to try to reinstall the verizon software to see if that's the problem, as I had no problems connecting after installing it on the other computer. I think iy may be a problem with how Verizon's program attempts to connect. Will also try repairing IE as this is also Verizon's version.
