Question Sharing Programs On A Network

I have a home network with 2 PC's. I'll call them A and B. I want to know if a program on PC 'A' can be run on PC 'B' and vice-versa. More specifically, I have Office XP and I want to be able to run it on both PC's. If anyone has done this or has any theories please let me know, thanks.

I believe that legally you can’t do that…

I know some programs will run… but not all because you need to have certain files on the computer that the installer adds.

But to run a program all you have to do is execute the .exe

It wont work. Unless you are runnig a NT/2000 server with Terminal server running and have the programs installed and set up to be used that way.

There are reasons there are network versions and single computer versions of software that are not related to making sure you pay for a network license. You will find that the office xp installer is not designed to install across the network.

About the best you can do with programs designed for single computer use in a network environment is to store data files on the server and share printers, even then you won't be able to do all the neat stuff you expect of network software. In my office we each have a copy of the word processor. We send our word processing files to the server where they are picked up by somebody else for editing.

As to single user programs that can be run across a network, they are few and far between. Nearly all are very simple programs indeed. Many are very long in the tooth Nothing as complicated as Office XP can be run that way.

If you set up a VPN you could run the programs but they would be running on the other computer. If you want the software to be used on both computers you'll have to get another license.

Tuf,

That might be good solution. He did say that he wants to run it on both computers. He didn't say if he wanted to run it on both computers at the same time.

Please explain VPN. As I understand what you are talking about he will be running the computer (A) with the copy of Office XP from his computer (B). Sort of like CarbonCopy back in the old dos days.

VPN=Virtual Private Network

Where you can actually use the desktop of another computer like it is your own. It's secure enough to use over the internet. So the computer you want to use doesn't even have to be on your LAN. It could be one at work or you could use your home computer from work.

Thanks for the help everyone. I think I'll try the VPN since I don't need to run it at the same time on both CPU's. I just want to have the option to use the programs on A or B.
