Win 98 install

Did a format and Win 98 1st ed install on a Gateway Pii 300 mhz. I get a registry problem that says vnetbios.vxd not loaded, to install the program or change the registry. I tried to load Norton to handle the registry problem, and it keeps freezing when I try to run Win Doctor . When I do cntrl/alt/del , not only is Norton not responding, but " Cfgwiz" not responding. When I try to end task with Norton, it locks. When I try to end task for Cfgwiz, it reboots. I have not seen Cfgwiz before. Any ideas? I thought I had a virus since the owner was running without virus protection. That is why the reformat. Perhaps I need to write zeros. Any idea what Cfgwiz is ? Thanks

hey

the cfgwiz is a DLL file used for ISDN configuration... as for the rest of what you're experiencing, go to this thread and follow GLC's advice:

http://forum.pcmech.com/showthread.p...threadid=13143

Best of luck!

ps... try a search for your situation before making a post and I can almost guarantee you that someone has been helped already... have fun!

Sounds like you've had quite a time of it. If everything's backed up already, I imagine you might save time zeroing & starting over. (reformat/reinstall)

The original problem seems to have been with the Network files, then complicated by Norton. cuffs gave you a link where glc helped a fellow reinstall his Networking. And here's a Gateway support article about Gateway/Norton issues: http://support.gateway.com/support/t...67605320.shtml

But you can avoid most of this reading if you are already reformatting/reinstalling. If on a network, disconnect while reinstalling. If not using any networking, disable the network card.

Best of luck,
. . . Gary

[p.s. ...there are apparently a few different cfgwiz "Configuration Wizards" out there - the one cuffs mentions is an ISDN setup wizard, another is from Norton & is mentioned in the Gateway link]

Thanks Gary and Cuffs... now I can fix it.

Cuffs, I never knew about the search feature. I tried it after the fact and found the answers . When I need an answer, I have been browsing the forums. I could have been using " search " and saving time and not bothering. Thanks both.

I have had the same problem installing win98. I did exactly what GLc mentioned. I removed everything in network neighborhood and then reinstalled what ever I needed for my internet connection.
