Saving Pictures

why when I save pictures to my Documents or Pictures Files from my Kodak CDs or the web,are save in a format that I can't open? before, when saved I just click on the icon and picture open
in small to the left and click twice opened full. but now I can't open in full because of formats. the icons before where red and white in color or the one from paint, but now, they look like icons
for programs or driver. can anyone, step by step explain how to fix this. I was told that XP automatically look for the program to open the pictures. in the pictures files, the pictures does not shows.only the icons that looks like drivers.I have WIN ME installed, but as far I know never have that problem with WIN98. I used to scan pictures and save them to pictures or documents files ,but can't now. transfered to CD and can't open full picture.
any help. Thanks.

What format are the pics?

What is the extension of the file name?

Right click on the pic and select Properties. You should find the extension there.

when you save a picture from a webpage, be sure that the "save as type" box is either bitmap, gif, or jpeg.
also, when you burn to a cd, be sure you are saving them as one of the above formats...
you could try to rename one of the pictures with .bmp or .jpeg at the end to see if it will open....(right click, rename)
what kind of changes have you made to your system before this started happening? (installed new software?)
let us know and we can help you better.....
